Affordable Housing update

The Affordable Housing issue is obviously one that concerns a lot of people. I am trying to get CHL, the organisation building the project, to come and talk at our September meeting. I'll update more as I hear about it.

I haven't been able to read all the comments, for some reason the order displaying on the web site is a bit screwy, but I have been trying to. There are a few things I will say though:

a) This is part of a Federal Government initiative. Casey Council don't have much say in the matter and the LRA certainly doesn't. One person asked why they didn't get a chance to vote on it, well you do have your chance on Saturday. That said, I don't think any candidate has made a mention about this.

b) I don't really care about people venting in general, but one recent comment attacked the LRA Committee. The entire committee are volunteers. We give up our time to try and make Lynbrook a better place. If anyone thinks they can do a better job you are quite welcome to come along and stand for the committee or even president.

c) Any further comments directly attacking the LRA members, without a full name and contact details, will be deleted. If we start getting many more I'll disable all comments.

d) I don't think this will be as much of an issue as people think. I just ask that you wait a few weeks and listen to what CHL have to say. I live here, I have a young daughter and I'm certainly not thinking of moving.

This whole issue really hasn't been handled very well by either the government or CHL. The lack of consultation and information has meant a lot of fear and uncertainty. Right now that is all heresay and speculation. Nothing has been completed, no one has moved in and yet people are selling their houses almost certainly without having spoken to CHL. I've only had two people contact me directly to discuss this.

If, after what I've said (and I've not had much more than one email further than the information night), you still want further action, I suggest you contact Anthony Byrne (Federal member for Holt) or, if he wins on Saturday, Ricardo Balancy.

The below was an email sent to the President. This is merely passing on information and does not represent a preference of the LRA either way. I would encourage all Lynbrook residents to think seriously about your vote on Saturday. Voting is your way to directly influence the government of this country.

Hi.

My name is Ricardo Balancy & I'm the Liberal Candidate for the seat of Holt at the Federal Elections on Saturday 21 August 2010.

You, or the organisation you represent, has been identified as a key service provider to residents and/or businesses in the Holt area (ie. Lysterfield Sth, Endeavour Hills, Doveton, Eumemmerring, Hallam, Narre Warren, parts of Berwick, Hampton Park, Lynbrook, Lyndhurst, Cranbourne).

In view of the very important choice the constituents of Holt will have to make on Saturday I am taking the initiative to introduce myself to you so you know who the Liberal candidate is for Holt in case that you, your members, associates or supporters haven’t received my brochures.

What Holt needs right now is real action, not words. The Coalition have already made a number of key commitments that will directly benefit Holt. Having lived in the electorate for the past 24 years is a definite advantage. If elected I will ensure that my electorate has a voice in government and that we receive our fair share of the Commonwealth funding. After 30 years of Labor in Holt, we're being taken for granted and pockets of our communities are missing out, including those who are struggling to provide vital services to families and members of the community most in need. People who have worked with me before know that I am a people's person. I like to be hands on and enjoy spending time in the field. If elected, my pledge is to be accessible, visible, and accountable to the people of Holt. I will want to be across all the issues that impact my electorate, whether local, state or federal. I will operate on the premise that if an issue impacts a member of, or a community or group within my electorate it is important.

Please consider the above and attached when casting your vote on Saturday. I would appreciate your assistance in sharing this with your members, associates or friends who are part of the wider Holt community.

Thank you for taking the time to read this email.

Please do not hesitate to give me contact me by phone or email, should you wish to know more about our Real Action plans impacting your service area, group, or industry.

Regards.

Open Letter from Steve Beardon

Open letter to Lynbrook/Lyndhurst residents and traders...Lets get the design correct...

In regard to Aylmer Road Lynbrook, discussion needs to be up front on if the current layout of the road/ proposed station and crossing is adequate. Planning needs to incorporate resident concern, not simply presented after the decision made.

I personally have concerns that the best option will not be implemented. As a former councillor for the area I actively ensured council funding was budgeted and also put on the agenda the need to re-align and redesign the precinct to ensure an underpass could be built.

In its current design I do not believe an underpass can be constructed and a level crossing, as currently planned, will see boom gates closed more than not, resulting in traffic backed up for kilometers. Imagine this every 5 to 10 minutes during peak hour, especially when the line is duplicated. A further annoyance will be the ding dongs that go with a signalized rail crossing every time trains come and go. Now is the time to ensure professional design.

Assurances need to be given to locals that the crossing at Aylmer Road will be an underpass, because, if not, the retrospective works to fix this intersection may take another generation to fund.

If the road is to be opened, as it should, the entire design needs to accommodate an underpass, future rail line duplication, and locals need to be involved and told of the problems that will occur if the road crossing is not an underpass, and also how an underpass could be designed and where it would be built. Underpasses take enormous amounts of space--so they need to be designed carefully to incorporate area amenity.

All our elected representatives need to hold public meetings and write to all home owners inviting public comment on an appropriate design, that will be safe, and one which ensures Aylmer Road will not become a traffic bottleneck with annoying noisy signalized boom gates echoing throughout the suburb from first train, to last train, from early morning, until late into the evenings. Our elected reps need to know what the public want, to ensure relevent planning departments have funding that will ensure station design which protects residents from a noisey, crime plagued, dirty station that detracts from area amenity.

Let's not forget this line will one day be extended through to Cranbourne East and beyond adding to rail traffic, and has yet to be ruled out as a freight line to the Port of Hastings. Stations also generate an enormous amount of traffic movement through on-site parking.

It is vitally important residents be consulted on the entire design for this rail station precinct. Car parking, Alymer road, freight trains and rail duplication plans all need to be canvassed with locals. After all locals deserve to be put first? Don't they?

Steve Beardon.
Former councillor representing Lynbrook, Lyndhurst, Cranbourne.
