Of late there have been really bad smells around the area and last night was particularly bad. We rang the EPA to complain and were told that they are going to be doing further surveys around the area.
I would suggest that if you have issues with odours around the area, to do the following:
During tip operating hours: Contact SITA on 9554 4555. If there are odours during that time they can try to do something about it. If you aren't happy with what SITA says, then contact the EPA.
Outside tip operating hours: Contact EPA on 9695 2777. Check their Polwatch web site for further details.
Check the "Read more" section for previous correspondence from SITA.
The other day I received an email from a Lynbrook complaining about
odours from the Hallam Rd landfill (or at least that was the
assumption). I sent off an email to the Operations Manager and received
the following reply:
We
became aware of this about 2 weeks ago during these very still nights
and early mornings.
We
found that the recent rains had washed some of the soil cover off in a
few locations forming a few deep furrows.
These
areas have now been recovered with additional soil and this problem
should have been rectified.
There
has also been some soil blending with animal manure by some landowners
in the general area. If we receive any reports of odour we can try and
trace it back you.
Although
it is difficult to do anything after hours as our planning permit
prevents the use of any machines if anyone who has a concern would like
to send me an email with their details I can return a call first thing
the next day and investigate.
I have asked for the best numbers/email to contact SITA on and I will
update this once I get them. SITA have asked that if there are any bad
odours during operating hours to contact them. They can then do
something about the issue. The phone number for reception is: 9554 4555
Another option is to contact the EPA. Their web site has details of
contact numbers and what information to provide them with: EPA Polwatch
